A suspect on transitional leave from prison is in custody after attempting to elude Medford Police Officers and crashing his vehicle late last night.

Around midnight, an MPD officer observed a vehicle traveling in the continuous left-turn lane on Crater Lake Avenue. The driver stopped at a green light and failed to maintain their lane. The officer initiated a traffic stop at Crater Lake Avenue and Grand Avenue and contacted the visibly intoxicated driver. As the officer spoke with him, the suspect suddenly fled.

Officers pursued the vehicle eastbound on East McAndrews Road to northbound Brookdale Avenue. The driver ran a stop sign at Lone Pine Road and struck landscaping boulders, causing the vehicle to flip and land upside down in a yard.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly detained while crawling out of the wreckage. He sustained only minor injuries, and no other occupants were in the vehicle.

The driver was transported to Providence Hospital for a court-ordered blood draw and medical clearance before being lodged in the Jackson County Jail on multiple charges. Four hours after the initial stop, he provided a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .14%.

No further information is available at this time.
